IMAX Seeks New Exclusive Thanksgiving 2026 Release After 'Narnia' Shift

IMAX is actively seeking a new film to fill its exclusive Thanksgiving 2026 release slot after Greta Gerwig's adaptation of "Narnia" shifted its theatrical debut to February 12, 2027, ahead of its Netflix streaming premiere. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond, speaking from Boston during the J.P. Morgan Global Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference, expressed confidence that an announcement for the replacement film is imminent, emphasizing the strategic importance of the holiday period for cinematic releases.

Despite the change in "Narnia's" schedule, Gelfond affirmed that IMAX's strategy of securing exclusive holiday releases for its theaters will persist in the coming years. He acknowledged that future partnerships and specific terms might vary, but the fundamental model of offering exclusive content to IMAX audiences remains a core component of the company's plan. This commitment underscores IMAX's dedication to providing a unique viewing experience and maintaining its competitive edge in the premium cinema market.

Gelfond also touched upon recent industry developments, including Walt Disney's introduction of "Infinity Vision," a new certification for premium large format cinemas. While Disney plans to re-release "Avengers: Endgame" and debut "Avengers: Doomsday" under this new branding, IMAX has secured a three-week exclusive run for "Dune 3." Gelfond clarified that "Infinity Vision" is primarily a marketing initiative by Disney, not an expansion of screen availability, and that IMAX's prior agreement for "Dune 3" prevented it from showing the new "Avengers" film. He also addressed investor concerns about Hollywood blockbusters' performance, reiterating his positive outlook on the upcoming movie slate for 2026.

The film industry is a dynamic landscape, constantly evolving with strategic shifts and innovative branding. IMAX's proactive approach to securing exclusive content and navigating competitive challenges demonstrates resilience and a forward-thinking vision. Such adaptability is crucial for sustained success, reminding us that even in the face of change, commitment to quality and strategic partnerships can lead to enduring achievements and continued growth.
